ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY
HYDROGEN ENERGY INSTITUTE
Since 2022, Zhejiang University Hydrogen Energy Institute (Hydrogen ZJU) has been working with the Mogan Mountain of Huzhou Hi-tech Industry Development Zone to build the Zhejiang University Deqing Hydrogen Energy Laboratory. The laboratory's mission is to support the national energy safety strategy and the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and explore solutions to forefront issues and common vital technical issues. It aims to become the leading systematic solution provider of material, components, and system testing and evaluation under high-pressure gaseous and liquid hydrogen conditions. Specifically, it has four main goals.
Promote vital technology innovation in hydrogen energy.
Create original and core equipment for hydrogen utilization.
Build a well-known and supportive hydrogen energy research and innovation platform.
Construct a global leading hydrogen safety testing and evaluation platform.
Led by Professor Jinyang Zheng, a Chinese Academy of Engineering member and an active global scholar, the laboratory hosts more than 80 interdisciplinary researchers, including broadly recognized experts, like the Chinese Academy of Engineering member, the Cheung Kong Scholar, and the Distinguished Young Scholar, and many active young scholars. Per the chain of the hydrogen energy industry, researchers focus on theoretical studies, vital technology innovations, testing and evaluation, standardization, and industrial application in green and low-carbon hydrogen production, gaseous and liquid hydrogen storage and transportation, hydrogen-electric coupling and transportation, and hydrogen safety. So far, they have achieved a substantial series of original and globally advanced technologies and devices and have applied them in the laboratory, including testing and evaluation devices for high-pressure hydrogen environmental component durability, high-pressure hydrogen environmental exposure, cryogenic mechanical property of liquid hydrogen equipment, mechanical properties of natural gas/hydrogen mixtures, and et al.
The laboratory's initial stage construction includes a space of 1100 m2 and the capability to test and evaluate material and components under high-pressure hydrogen conditions (up to 140MPa). In the future, the laboratory will be capable of providing testing and evaluation services to the global hydrogen energy industry chain and contribute to national and local hydrogen research and industry development.
