Hydrogen ZJU and Arkema Signed An Agreement to Work on Hydrogen Storage and Transportation Development

December 08.2022

Abstract:

Recently, the Zhejiang University Hydrogen Energy Institute (Hydrogen ZJU) and Arkema, a leader in specialty materials, signed an agreement to study the compatibility of Rilsan®PA11 in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. Their collaboration will connect China’s standards of relevant fields with Arkema’s experience in the Rilsan®PA11 application.

The original piece of news is in Chinese and reported by Arkema.

On November 24, 2022, the Zhejiang University Hydrogen Energy Institute (Hydrogen ZJU) and Arkema, a leader in specialty materials, signed an agreement to study the compatibility of Rilsan®PA11 in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. The ceremony took place in Shanghai. Ms. Zhang, Xiaoyu, the CEO of Arkema in China, and Prof. Zheng, Jinyang, Dean of Hydrogen ZJU participated in the ceremony. As we know, hydrogen compatibility is one of the key indexes of hydrogen application in high-pressure environments and a critical reference for hydrogen storage and transportation material selection. Thus, Hydrogen ZJU and Arkema will connect China’s standards of relevant fields with Arkema’s experience in the Rilsan®PA11 application to promote hydrogen storage and transportation development in China.

As the impact of climate change and the energy crisis is enlarging, developing clean and renewable energy becomes urgent. Hydrogen energy, as a type of clean energy with easy-to-get sources and broad application, has become a hot field around the globe. As one of the significant contributors, Arkema plays a critical role in the technology revolution of new energy development.

One of Arkema’s missions is to innovate materials and create a sustainable world. At present, Arkema takes hydrogen-related material research as a crucial task. As China is an important market, Arkema is developing local research on gaseous hydrogen storage and transportation and seeking collaboration with local research institutions. Thus, the establishment of the Hydrogen ZJU - Arkema partnership is a milestone in Arkema’s development in China.

Prof. Zheng’s team has been working on hydrogen storage vessels, cryogenic pressure vessels, and flexible high-pressure composite pipes for a long time. They have successfully completed more than 20 national projects on hydrogen storage and transportation equipment, type III and type IV gaseous hydrogen cylinders, and hydrogen safety.

At the ceremony, Prof. Zheng said that hydrogen energy is an important aspect of energy transformation and will significantly contribute to achieving the carbon neutrality objective. Furthermore, hydrogen storage plays a crucial role in the whole chain of the hydrogen energy industry, which connects hydrogen production and hydrogen use. Therefore, Hydrogen ZJU and Arkema will work on the application of Rilsan® PA11 under China’s local standards.
