Recently, Dr. Yang Hou, the Director of the Hydrogen Production Research Center, was awarded the first prize of the Chinese Society of Particuology Natural Science Award and the third prize of the Zhejiang Natural Science Award. Also, he was honored as the National Outstanding Researcher in the fossil and chemical industry for his remarkable contributions to the field. Congratulations!
Dr. Yang Hou received three awards and honors
The first prize of the ‘Chinese Society of Particuology Natural Science Award” is for Dr. Hou (PI), Dr. Lecheng Lei, Dr. Bin Yang, and Dr. Zhongjian Li’s outstanding contributions to the basic research on the synergistic improvement mechanism of photogenerated charge separation and utilization and water treatment application. This research produces original theories of photoelectrocatalytic decontamination for high-salt organic wastewater in the chemical industry and collaborative hydrogen production technology, which will shed light on the design and production of highly efficient composite photoelectricity. The third prize of the Zhejiang Natural Science Award is for Dr. Hou (PI), Dr. Lecheng Lei, Dr. Bin Yang, and Dr. Zhongjian Li’s devotion to structural design and catalytic mechanism research on carbon-based electrode studies. In their studies, they offer structural design principles based on key carbon-based non-noble metal electrodes during the high energy efficiency conversion process to solve the low power efficiency issue in electrolyzing water to produce hydrogen.
Dr. Hou was moderating an academic activity
Dr. Hou is now the ZJU100 Young Professor and doctoral supervisor at Zhejiang University. He is an active scholar in the field and has been awarded significant honors, titles, and funding. Specifically, Dr. Hou is an excellent PI who received the National Natural Science Fund for Young Talents, a Special Expert of Zhejiang Province, an FRSC, et al. At the same time, he is a trustworthy leader. Since late 2022, he has been the Hydrogen Production Research Center Director at the Zhejiang University Hydrogen Energy Institute (Hydrogen ZJU).
Dr. Hou has been working on using renewable energy to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen and has contributed significantly to achieving the zero-carbon emission objective in China and the world. His research ranges from using renewable energy to produce electricity, studying green hydrogen energy, developing carbon-based nano/heterojunctions for energy conversion and environmental remediation, to screening new energy materials with AI to develop environment-friendly catalysts. So far, he has published more than 260 articles (cited more than 20,000 times) in world-known journals, such as Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Energy Environ. Sci., Adv. Mater., Chem. Soc. Rev., and Nat. Commun.. Since 2020, he has been admitted to the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers. He was also admitted to the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University in 2019 and 2020. In addition, his research has led to 40 China patents and 1 USA invention.
In recent years, his team has focused on technological innovation in electrolyzing seawater to produce hydrogen directly, the alkaline electrolytic industrial sewage hydrogen production, and water electrolysis hydrogen production with a proton exchange membrane. One of their substantive achievements is using hydrogen production technology of ternary enzyme-like active metal-organic framework material to realize ampere-level water electrolysis. We look forward to hearing more exciting news about Dr. Hou and his team.
The team’s selected achievements
At the same time, with Dr. Hou’s coordination, Hydrogen ZJU is developing its leadership in hydrogen production from low-carbon energy and expects to promote hydrogen energy research and industry development substantively.
